Adam Port

Over the course of his discography, Adam Port has made a name for himself as a man of many facets and sentiments. On his new Keinemusik EP, we'll meet him again as the virtuoso of tender, yet inducing tones and grooves, delivering nothing less than an anthemic floor romance on side A, fittingly titled "White Noise Romantica". In sound design, it's as Port as it gets with all the percussive nuances, the looming haze of bass, the staccato synth hook that altogether intertwine to a gradual build-up of excitement, yet avoiding an overly obvious break-construction and rather maintaining a graceful posture from start to finish.
Another affective sureshot on the flipside - let's rather talk of an AA side here than a B - as Port puts his touch on Yeah But No's single "Run Run Run", originally released last year on Sinnbus. Port remains close to the originals structure and main ingredients, yet implementing his signature percussive and rhythmic notion and ramping up the tune's dramatic and moving impact, to a point where singer Fabian Kuss' concluding chorus "I just wanna run" easily can be read as "I just wanna dance".
released May 29, 2020

On 2020's first Keinemusik release, we find Rampa kicking things off in a slightly different way. Instead of continuously enhancing his profile with even more of his own original material, he decided to put out some tunes that he road tested over the last year, creating quite a stir whenever he dropped them. Those are basically tunes he likes to play over and over again - refined by himself to align with his sense of club use premises.
In choosing the source material for that matter, he followed his penchant for sounds outside the western hemisphere, laying hands on "Afro Sambroso", a piece by Lokkhi Terra and Dele Sosimi, and furthermore its remix by Francesco Chiocci - once released through MoBlack. Shout out to them for also helping getting this new version out. A version that speeds up a little and features various sonic finetunings that clearly implement Rampa's sound signature.
On the flipside we're starting from a similar point of departure. Mano Negra's underlying original had been retouched already by Made In TLV, before Rampa did his own version that centres Manu Chao's unmistakable croon and the original's steady groove, but adds a fair share of contemporary peaktime flavour.
That makes two rejuvenations of world music classics that share a certain sonic spectrum and make a cohesive set of tunes. Tunes that by the way blend perfectly into each other.

Chito's Song by Cochemea

"Chito's Song", the latest single from Daptone's Electro-Sax Space warrior, Cochemea Gastelum. Expanding on the themes explored on his debut album "All My Relations" - a reference to the cosmic, spiritual, and familial connections we share within nature and amongst our fellow man - the song is a tribute to his Uncle, a free spirit who nourished Cochemea's love and appreciation for their kindred music, proving a roadmap for his own musical and ancestral journey: an exploration into the bonds we have with our past, present, and future. The hypnotic, percussive groove grabs you from the start, giving Cheme a solid foundation to lay down a silky, soulful melody with his electrified, wah-wah-kissed Alto Saxophone. A touching homage to an extraordinarily, influential spirit.

Praise Poems 7 by Various Artists

Tramp Records is one of Germany's tiniest but funkiest record labels. We release new bands, but also re-issue quality (not necessarily rare) funk, soul, jazz, folk and afro beat too.

After more than two years of hard work, the Tramp Records crew invites you to join them on yet another enlightening journey into soulful Jazz, Folk and Funk from the 1970s.
This 7th volume contains seventeen Soul, Folk and Jazz nuggets from between the late 1960s and the early 1980s. One of the many highlights is the opening track by Marva Josie which is most likely one of the finest vocal jazz recordings ever put on wax. Bill Comstock delivers an inimitable example of uncategorizable Jazz-meets-Soul-meets-Folk. Promotion Soul Concern was a group originally from a small town close to Bonn, the former capital of Germany. Their version of "Summertime" stands out among the myriad of cover version of this all-time classic. Another jewel which we are extremely proud to present is "So Far Down" by James Kelly Duhon - absolutely marvelous! Shalynn and The New Hope Project deliver an offering of beautiful folk music with a psychedelic touch not to be missed. These are just 6 out of the 17 tracks which are now meant to be discovered by you!
Hopefully, this will be the case with the little-known and vastly underrated singles, B-Sides and album tracks that are featured on "Praise Poems 7 - A journey into soulful jazz and funk from the 1970s" which is stuffed full of hidden gems. Some say it is one of the best installments in the series thus far. While we certainly approve that statement, we also give thanks to the wonderful artists who made their praises into poems to bless our ears and souls today.

Algo Muy Profundo by Ralph Weeks & Combo Lulo

50 years ago, a young Panamanian singer by the name of Ralph Weeks, who a few years prior had cut his teeth in the U.S. music landscape with the group Johnny & The Expressions, self-produced and independently released a record with an absolute monster of a soul ballad called “Something Deep Inside.” It was a song that Weeks had come up with on the spot during one of many gigs in the heart of Brooklyn’s Prospect Heights, at the time a cultural hub and community for many Panamanians living in the borough. Along with his group, The Telecasters, Weeks often played at a Panamanian-owned club in the neighborhood called 4 Star’s (STA4R’s) which would independently sponsor the release of the tune on a 7-inch single.
Fast forward to 2019, where a serendipitous meeting between Ralph Weeks and Names You Can Trust turned into a solid formation of musical synchronicity, bonded over a shared belief in musical fusion, a weaving of musical threads that was similarly the foundation of that earlier era in Panama. It’s a fusion that has become a constant theme throughout the Names You Can Trust catalog in the last 10 years, connecting the dots from NY, the Caribbean and Latin America. An immediate plan was put into motion: return Weeks to a studio atmosphere that had eluded him in the preceding decades, a vibe and live musical presence that would be reminiscent of his time recording with The Telecasters and The Exciters in Panama.
In the ultimate tribute to Mr. Weeks and that foundation, NYCT label mates Combo Lulo unpacked the 50-year old original tune and refashioned it into a timeless rocksteady ballad. It was an opportunity for Weeks to acquaint himself with a new band and a new generation of musical talent. Ultimately, it was an unexpected chance for Weeks to reconnect to the music he wrote one fateful evening in a Brooklyn club. For Combo Lulo, Names You Can Trust, and now the rest of his musical admirers, it’s a chance to hear how gracefully Weeks’ voice has aged, still silky smooth with those beloved falsetto runs, sweet and rounded like a barrel-aged añejo rum. It’s a testament to the timelessness of Weeks’ original music, and certainly another reminder of how far and wide even the smallest of musical blips can spread.
Presented as a double-sided bilingual 45 single, both versions of Weeks’ classic tune, “Algo Muy Profundo” and “Something Deep Inside,” have been formatted in the traditional Jamaican style, skillfully cut live and mixed under the guidance of NYCT and Combo Lulo’s talented musicians. It’s a tribute to a brilliant record and an unsung architect of Latin American sweet soul, but also a love letter to a very particular NY-Caribbean fusion that theoretically could have happened 50 years ago, depending on the borough you resided in. After all, there was always something deep inside.

Atlantico by Combo Lulo

Combo Lulo is that rare possibility of true magic moments manifested. Embodying the classic sentiment of a New York supergroup with an ensemble of friends and like-minded musicians whose resume is too full of credits and accolades to grasp in one shot, the band is a testament to what can happen when locked together for a two-day session in a Brooklyn studio.

Drawing inspiration and direction from band leader, composer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Sarason, Combo Lulo moves side to side from effortless Jamaican foundation rhythms into the further reaches of Caribbean influence…incorporating a natural transition between Jamaican classics and the essence of Afro-Latin ritmo. It’s a musical match made in heaven and, more importantly, it’s carried out with the gentle and deft touch of veteran studio musicians with deep appreciation and nuanced understanding. Together with Names You Can Trust, it’s a locked in groove that is a perfect slice of roots, collaboration & present day experimentation that is sure to have any listener feeling nice.

Theory of Revolution remixes by Timewarp inc

The first remix single release from Timewarp inc’s fourth studio LP album “Theory of Revolution”. This will be a remix series that will constantly continue during this year, providing one new single track remixed, bringing you something new & fresh to discover!
This first remix single is brought by Athens based producer RSN. As you can discover on this particular remix, RSN managed to bring the original song’s dub-reggae-funk style along with the Reggae-Raga & Dancehall vocals from Gobey into his music style & territory, blended with soul, trip hop, downtempo and his floating music character over the original song.
An instrumental version of the remix is included on the release.

This is the second remix single release from Timewarp inc's fourth studio LP album "Theory of Revolution", and this time it is brought to you by Athens based producer and musician Antigoni Kostala known as Beat Ride.
As you will discover on this particular remix, Beat Ride managed to take the most important elements from the original song, mostly vocals, some fundamental keys and melodica hooks, those skunky guitar reggae chords and a few riffs and solos from here and there.
While the original song is a dub- reggae-funk-tropical based song, with heavy reggae hip hop vocals from sistah Jammaroots, Beat Ride recreates, re-thinks and transforms the original concept of the song into a dreamy, cinematic downtempo blended with trip hop air and themed with a 70's vintage and organic way. An instrumental version of the remix is also included on the release, served with extra flavours and elements compared to the vocals remix.

This is the third remix single release from Timewarp inc's fourth studio LP album "Theory of Revolution", and this time it is brought to you by Greece based producer and beat- maker from Crete Island known as mCurtis.
A remix all made up under an exclusive trip hop vibe, close to the original released version that delivers and features the unique deep east based instrument Santuri.

mCurtis takes the track in another level with mpc-based fat downtempo beats, adding more space and warmth with synths and samples by blending more world style & ethnic elements on the song like live Oud played from his mate Georgios Tzioumaris, and extra percussions.

The Everettes by The Everettes

Three ladies sing, their melodies enchant to the groove of the band. Horns push, strings sweeten up. The Everettes bring back the nearly forgotten vibe of 60s girl groups to the present and they do it with their very own charm. Clearly inspired by Northern Soul, Stax and the latest neo soul revivals, the Berlin based combo is not stating the big question of genre though – they just rather create what they love: wonderful songs, to which you want to hear the vinyl crackle and dance across the allnighter floor.
After compelling performances at British scooter rallies, the Baltic Soul Weekender and even Lollapalooza, The Everettes will now release their self-titled first album in May. It contains no less than 14 original tracks, mostly recorded live and through analogue gear, with alternating lead and backing vocals by Jess Roberts, Katharina Dommisch and Laura Niemeyer.
The band emerged from Berlin’s former soul darlings The Floorettes, who were popular also beyond the scene and even caused a stir in Japan with their album 'Pocket Full of Soul' in 2012. Five of those band members are still involved, two of the singers joined since then. Thereby the sound also got more rooty and grown-up and the three front women complement each other very well in their vocals. While British northern soul Jess, who already released solo singles with Acid Jazz Records, delights with her contagious power, original Berliner (and full-time nursery teacher) Laura soothes with warm soulful tones and Katharina, just as in the previous band, reminds the listener of the likes of Carole King or Laura Nyro with her gentle and captivating voice.
In studio The Everettes worked with Robbie A.J. Moore and Sam Vine, who also produced the latest album by Jesper Munk among others. Thereby it was all about capturing the most of the magic from playing together in a live setting, instead of trying to bring the tracks to too much perfection. This undisguised freshness is also the ultimate feature of the nine or more musicians at their concerts. You should definitely see them!

Resense 048 by SoulBrigada

After their brilliant debut on Resense, SoulBrigada returns with two new cuts. Following the proven formula, two classic Funk & Soul joints get the SoulBrigada treatment to fire up the dancefloors again.
'Help' is a Northern Soul gem from the midwest - from 1969. The raw & funky sound of the song follows with great perfection a JB style, which is complemented by the sweet soul voice of the singer. The SoulBrigada-Edit focuses even more on the percussive side of the song and the extension provides a real dancefloor filler.
'Love U Baby' is a great Soultune, which was also released in 1969 by a vocal duo from the southwest of the USA. The song stands out because of its funkiness and the great interaction of the two singers. The rework provides the right dose of funk with additional drums, repetitive editing and expansion.

That combined with some energetic bouncy bass lines makes this an instant classic for the dance floors.

The flipside takes a completely different approach by diving deep into the rare groove treasure chest and pick out a 60s sample on the epic Fire Cracker tune. Gramophone Soul does what he does best by changing just enough to keep it interesting for modern audience without destroying the groove of the original track. Matasuna Records Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc. ‎- Baila Chibiquiban

After the successful "Lupita" 7inch in April 2020, Matasuna is delighted to reissue another Latin gem from "Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc.". "Baila Chibiquiban" is also a killer cut, which is now finally available again on 7" single. The original version is complemented by a great edit by Frenchman "Tonton Boom" (aka "Mr. Boom"), who had already attracted attention as a digital promo some time ago. For this official release, his version got a new analog mix at "Microgroove Studio" in Toulouse to sound better than ever. Another essential 7inch for every record collection.

"Joseph Van Het Groenewoud", who would later become known as "Nico Gomez", was a musician & composer from the Netherlands. He spent his youth in the Antilles, Cuba and other islands of the Caribbean, which had an unmistakable influence on his music. As a passionate musician and skilled guitarist he was familiar with the typical rhythms and melodies of this region. Later he returned to the Netherlands, before fleeing from there to Belgium in 1946 to escape from serving in the Dutch army in Indonesia. From then on he called himself "Nico Ooms". It's said that he was so obsessed with Cuban music that he changed his name to "Nico Gomez" - in any case, the name fit better with the Latin American music he brought to the stage. He had made a name for himself as a composer and arranger for various artists and orchestras – e.g. he wrote for "Los Chakachas", a well-known Belgian Latinsoul combo. But he also conducted the "Nico Gomez Orchestra".

One of the most sought-after recordings was the 1971 album "Ritual" by his band "Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc.". It is considered one of the best Afrolatin albums of the 1970s - especially once this masterpiece was (re)discovered by Djs and its popularity soared. The album is a tasty mixture of Latinfunk grooves, deep Afrosoul and Chicano rock influences like fuzzy guitar and heavy organ.

The original version Baila Chibiquiban on the A-side is a killer latin psych funk tune written by Nico Gomez. A distinctive bassline, fuzz guitar, deep rhodes, tons of breaks and soulful vocals make a funk monster that burns everything down.

Mr. Boom's version on the B-side takes the original even further, to underline this not only on the percussive side. His new arrangement continuously heads towards the climax, which is interrupted by a break to create new tension. Already successfully tested, this edit - which was longed for by many on 7inch - will get a permanent place in record bags and make dancefloors explode.

El Michels has since lent his signature sound to artists from Adele to Dr John, Lana Del Rey to Aloe Blacc, and a who’s who list of others. In 2016 he co-founded Big Crown Records and has since produced the lion’s share of its output. A short stint as the touring band for Wu Tang Clan in 2007 led to the cult classics Enter The 37th Chamber (2009) and Return To The 37th Chamber (2017). Adult Themes marks the long awaited, highly anticipated return to an album of original compositions from El Michels Affair.

In 2017 in between producing, playing, and recording on other artists’ records Leon Michels began creating compilations of short interludes intended to be sampled by hip hop producers. Some of these wound up becoming songs by Jay Z & Beyonce, Travis Scott, and Don Toliver. These minute-long snippets were inspired by the dense moody work of ‘60s composers like David Axelrod, and Francois de Roubaix, as well as Moondog’s brand of classical jazz. Michels was having so much fun creating these instrumental / orchestral nuggets that he decided to expand on some of the ideas and create what would become the soundtrack for a movie that has yet to be made, an imaginary film entitled “Adult Themes.”

The album plays like the colors on an artists pallet. Songs like “Rubix” and “Villa” are densely orchestrated with the hard-hitting drums that El Michels Affair is known for. On “Life of Pablo”, Leon’s son makes his first appearance on record and intros a song with an epic arrangement and a moving mood. “Hipps” is a drum heavy ballad that could’ve easily fit on EMA’s debut record, Sounding Out the City. Other compositions like “The Difference” and “Kill The Lights” are bare, melodic mood pieces with sparse drums and sophisticated chord movement. All of these tunes come together to make perfect backgrounds for dialogue and action.

One of the beautiful things about instrumental music is that the listener can decide what the narrative is. With Adult Themes El Michels Affair has created a “choose your own adventure” in musical form.

Look At My Soul: The Latin Shade Of Texas Soul by Andrian Quesada feat The Black Pumas,

The Album was released for the first time  from Amazon music October 2018 in The USA and was one of the Best albums for The Zuzu Club in 2018 .

Depending on where you're from or who you’re talking to, you might hear Latin Soul referred to as Brown-Eyed Soul, Chicano Soul, Oldies, or Rolas. These bits of jargon describe a sound that is rooted in both Black and Brown music — two cultures borrowing and exchanging ideas from one another, mixing them, and then laying them down on tape to create something special and original. This album is just like that. Adrian Quesada, a Grammy winner from Laredo, TX, first conceived the idea for this LP over a decade ago while being interviewed with Tejano legend Ruben Ramos.
This album is a collection of original compositions and carefully selected classics that embody the style of the golden era of Latin Soul. The songs themselves are recorded onto analog tape, with a few of them done entirely live in the studio — a true component to the Latin Soul sound which embraced imperfection in exchange for energy on recordings. From the opening drum break and horn section of the Radiants’ classic “Ain’t No Big Thing,” to the original lowrider-esque“Joey,” there’s a nostalgic connection drawn for the listener. Swirling and pulsing organs, reverb-soaked guitars and rimshots, big horn sections and harmonizing vocals - just a few ingredients that make up the warm sound of Latin Soul. The album plays like thededication hour of your local radio station, a few cruisin’ classics mixed with funky numbers and hip-shakers that all move into one another effortlessly. There is even a nod to the South of Border with Freddy Fender’s “Boogaloo En Monterrey,” with lead vocals byRuben Ramos, “El Gato Negro” himself — an endearing gesture to his late and sorely missed friend.

No Laggin' & Draggin' by Renaldo Domino

RENALDO DOMINO NO LAGGIN' & DRAGGIN'

CATALOG: CLMN-180
RELEASE DATE: 2/7/2020
Renaldo Domino blasted onto the fertile Chicago soul scene of the late 60s with a voice as sweet as sugar and deep grooves that sound just as fresh five decades later. Releasing singles on Mercury subsidiaries Smash and Blue Rock, and later Twinight records, Renaldo’s all-too-brief career has still managed to leave an impact to all those lucky enough to hear it.
Renaldo returned to the spotlight in 2007 when the Chicago reissue powerhouse Numero Group put him on the cover of their Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation compilation (which included other greats Syl Johnson, The Notations, and many more).
It was during this time that he flew to New York to play as part of the now-legendary Dig Deeper series that he met JB Flatt and the Brooklyn Rhythm Band. As soon as Renaldo hit the first note they knew his voice was undiminished and that they were in the presence of a truly special talent.
In early 2018 they set out to record new tracks that would live up to Renaldo’s great early records. Assembling a crack team of Brooklyn’s best they pulled out all the stops, creating a mix between the lush arrangements of Chicago’s early soul style and the hard-hitting beat of current Brooklyn soul.
Produced by Jeremy Kay, arranged by JB Flatt (Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Durand Jones & The Indications), engineered by Vince Chiarito (Ikebe Shakedown, Charles Bradley), and backed by an all-star cast of some of the Brooklyn soul’s finest musicians this is without a doubt Renaldo’s strongest new work in many years.

Gold vinyl limited to 900 copies.

About Time by Malcolm Strachan

Scottish trumpeter Malcolm Strachan is a founder member of top UK funk/jazz-funk band The Haggis Horns as well as being one of the busiest session musicians in the UK today. In a professional career spanning 20 years, he's recorded with the likes of Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamiroquai, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas, Jesse Glynne, The Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band, Black Honey, The New Mastersounds and Blue Note saxophone legend Lou Donaldson. Now he's finally releasing his first solo album, aptly titled "About Time", on Haggis Records and he's going back to his original roots...Jazz
The album is a collection of original compositions, all written and arranged by Malcolm, which are firmly rooted in the classic acoustic modern jazz style typified by the great 60's and 70's recordings on the legendary Blue Note Records label. A nice variation of themes and tempos feature throughout the album. From full-on latin vibes to beautiful ballads, soul jazz grooves to cinematic soundtrack flavours, all woven together by a great group of experienced musicians.
Malcolm's core quartet is himself on trumpet/flugelhorn, fellow Haggis Horns members George Cooper (piano) and Erroll Rollins (drums), plus Courtny Tomas on double bass. Featured guests are Atholl Ransome on tenor sax (The Haggis Horns), Rob Mitchell on baritone sax (Abstract Orchestra) and Danny Barley on Trombone. Strings are courtesy of Richard Curran and the percussionist is one of the finest session players in Europe, Karl Vanden Bossche (Incognito, Robert Palmer, Joss Stone, The Gorillaz, Sade, Blur - He and Malcolm met while touring with Mark Ronson)
Malcolm's love of jazz comes from his parents. Aged 7, his jazz musician father gave him a trumpet. From then on, jazz was his life. His musical education came via music teachers, youth jazz orchestras and jazz summer schools but mostly from his dad's record collection listening to Art Blakey and Dizzy Gillespie records and learning to improvise and solo by ear. At 18, he enrolled at Leeds College of Music and quickly immersed himself in the city's vibrant acid jazz, funk and soul scene and from making his recording debut in 1999 with The New Mastersounds, jazz was his musical passion but took a back seat to funk/soul/pop which were the day job. Until now.

Jazz is back. The wait is over. It really is "About Time" for Malcolm Strachan

Road Trip by Beat Bronco Organ Trio

Not the typical standard Organ Trio Soul Jazz. This is a powerhouse on another level (and with some great guests too), and will be a constant in the record boxes of the right DJ's for a long time" - Snowboy
It’s album release time for this Madrid-based soul/jazz organ trio who have been burning up stages and festivals throughout 2019 and who have already had a successful single out on Rocafort Records. Beat Bronco Organ Trio have not rewritten the Hammond musical handbook, but they do what it says on the tin rather splendidly – a Road Trip that grooves, swings and sashays around the familiar but much loved funky jazz theme.
Although it’s impossible to listen to the album without summoning up the ghosts of Jimmies McGriff & Smith and the like, nearly all tracks here are originals and shout out personality, verve and respectful homage to the tradition. Featuring the usual leitmotifs: Shaftish film soundtrack, lo-fi lounger, gospel-tinged toe-tapper, the hip shaker and much wah-wah frenesi, there’s nothing not to like if the genre is your bag.
The steaming horn section on “Hard Play” thickens the sauce à la JBs and the Meters, aided along by a unique orchestra of handclaps. Vocalist and guitarist Alberto Palacios storms in with “Hey Hey”, an old Dave Bartholomew classic from New Orleans, just to remind us where Fats Domino and Ray Charles got it all from. Chip Wickham makes two welcome appearances on flute, adding an extra jazzy touch to “Squirtly” and “Electro Pi” – the latter a fabulous trippy, spacious head-nodder that demands in our opinion some kind of a wigged out drum’n’bass remix. Every track is clearly dominated by variations on the vintage keyboard, be it Hammond, Clavinet or Minimoog; all roads lead to that sexy, sacred sound.
Spain is already prominent on the modern-day Funk map thanks to groups like The Sweet Vandals, Speak Low and Mighty Vamp – and it comes as no surprise that our hero trio featured at various times in all these bands. Gabri Casanova (keys), Lucas de Mulder (guitar, percussion) and Antonio "Pax" Alvarez (drums, percussion) have been busy reviving the funk gospel for some time now. Road Trip is an elegant culmination of their efforts in keeping alive a revered and timeless tradition that still today serves as a reference to where all the good stuff came from: The Church!

How The Mighty Fall by Izo FitzRoy

Vocal powerhouse Izo FitzRoy exploded on to the scene in 2017 with her debut LP 'Skyline', the album incorporating a stunning fusion of styles spanning gospel, funk and soul as Izo's raw bluesy tone and direct lyricism took centre stage.
Her new album 'How The Mighty Fall' builds further on the soul foundations of her debut. Recorded between Paris, London and Sheffield, it sees her collaborating with three stellar producers and a host of talented musicians.
Disco royalty – Dimitri From Paris (Glitterbox, BBE) directs fellow Parisians Cotonete on her smash single 'I Want Magic'. Studio wizard Shawn Lee (BBE, Ubiquity) brings the funky AOR vibes on 'Slim Pickings' and the Mercury Prize nominated - Colin Elliott (Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker, Paul Weller) who produced the bulk of the album, completes the trio. Guesting on the record are the UK's most in demand brass section – The Haggis Horns and Izo's long-time collaborators - Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir.
Conceived during the aftermath of the breakdown of her long-term relationship, Izo looked to this personal experience for inspiration for the album as well as casting further afield at the wider themes of mental, societal and communication breakdowns.
Despite the strong material, at one point it seemed the record might never materialise. Just as the world was getting on board with her debut LP and international touring was taking off, Izo lost the use of her voice and required surgery on her vocal chords in the second part of 2018. A long schedule of vocal rehabilitation was necessary to get back to a position where she could first talk, then sing regularly enough to get back to work.
Thankfully after this difficult personal period for her, the silver lining from the experience was that post-recovery she gained a whole new octave at the top of her vocal range! This in turn has influenced her song writing on the album and allowed her to enhance her compositions with more vocal light and shade from this unexpected gift.

Language of Love by Jason Joshua

Since exploding onto the scene with his debut 45, “Rosegold” and it’s anthemic follow-up, “I Don’t Care," Jason Joshua has built a dedicated following for his distinctive latin-soul sound and his notoriously titillating live performances. Following a string of homegrown Miami recordings with the Beholders on his own Mango Hill Records, Jason hopped the plane to Riverside to gather the Penrose Scholars for a session with his friend Bosco Mann, where he was eager to prove that just like a record, there’s more than one side to a man: “Language of Love” finds an ebullient Jayjo bubbling over an uptempo, guiro-laced latin-soul groove, while on the flip, “La Vida es Fría” slows to a dark crawl over which his Bataan-esque bilingual croons of cold-world sadness intertwine with mournful violins. But there is a glimmer of hope in the end as he enjoins us, We can work it out / If you know what I’m talking about...

Lupita by Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc.

NOTE: THIS IS A VINYL ONLY RELEASE! NO DOWNLOADS AVAILABLE!

Matasuna Records is delighted to reissue one of their absolute highlights and favourite songs of Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc. As well as the original version, which was released on a 7inch by Mr. Bongo a few years ago and is completely sold out, they've included a rework by the restless and well-known US producer & Dj Bosq. His version, which became a DJ weapon as a digital promo, is now officially licensed on vinyl for the first time. For this release his version was revised once again for the best possible sound quality on an essential 7inch with the newly mastered original song.
Joseph Van Het Groenewoud, who would later become known as Nico Gomez, was a musician & composer from the Netherlands. From then on he called himself Nico Ooms. It's said that he was so obsessed with Cuban music that he changed his name to Nico Gomez - in any case, the name fit better with the Latin American music he brought to the stage. He had made a name for himself as a composer and arranger for various artists and orchestras – e.g. he wrote for Los Chakachas, a well-known Belgian Latinsoul combo. But he also conducted the Nico Gomez Orchestra.
One of the most sought-after recordings was the 1971 album Ritual by his band Nico Gomez And His Afro Percussion Inc.
Lupita on the A-side is a cover version of the song by Perez Prado, the Cuban-born King of Mambo, who has legendary status in his adopted country of Mexico. In contrast to Prado's elated original, Nico Gomez's version is an absolute funk monster, driven by heavy percussions, psychedelic organ grooves, fuzz guitar, exciting brass and a deep bass line. A truly extraordinary song!
Bosq's version on the B-side takes the original even further, adding more percussive elements and killer beats and breaks. His DJ-friendly rework has proven itself on dance floors around the world, always turning the mood into a hot melting pot.

The Devonns by The Devonns

The Devonns dust off the golden age of 70's Chicago Soul with their self-titled debut album on Record Kicks.

Straight from the streets of Chicago, Illinois, The Devonns (pronounced "De vaughns") are the brand new soul outfit and the latest addition of the Record Kicks' family, whose self-titled debut album that drops April 03, is an assortment of influences taking us back to the heyday of soul.
Drawing influences from bands such as The Dramatics, The Isley Brothers and Leroy Hutson, yet bringing in their own unique modern twist, influenced by artists such as Jamie Lidell and Raphael Saadiq; singer Mat Ajjarapu explains how unintentionally, the rich heritage of Chicago's history with soul music influenced him.
"The city was at the epicentre of a lot of good music back in the 50's all the way to the 80's, a lot of the labels specialising in soul were based in the Chicago and we even had our own sound known as "Chicago soul". Through several years of crate digging it surprised me how many songs I loved were recorded in this city, for example one of my favourites is this great little song by The Natural Four, produced by Leroy Hutson 'Can This Be Real', and released via Curtom Records."
The band started in 2016 after multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Mathew Ajjarapu dropped out of med school and found himself unemployed and drifting. Listening to music constantly at the time, he found inspired to put a band together and create his own music. Pairing up with some of the best musicians Chicago has to offer, he founded The Devonns: the rhythm duty is entrusted to Khalyle Hagood (bass), Ari Lindo (guitar) and Khori Wilson (drums).
Originally he wanted to focus on 50s style doo-wop, similar to The Flamingos; rich in reverb and vocal harmonies, but in the first initial practise they had it was evident the band clicked on their love of soul music from the 70s, so their music took a natural turn towards that sound, with tracks such as the Wilson Pickett-esque single 'Tell Me'.
The release took almost two years to complete as Mat explains "I am a perfectionist, I had a very specific vision in my head about how it should sound and I wasn't going to rest until I achieved it."

"This is a definitely a throwback soul record, as well as being drawn to lush and intricate arrangements of Motown, I was also inspired by the more lo-fi works of smaller labels such as Chess and Capsoul, and I wanted to capture the magic they had in those recordings in our record, as everything feels too precise nowadays" clarifies Mat.
It was thanks to his engineer Mike Hagler, who introduced him to Paul Von Mertens (Mavis Staples, Paul McCartney, Elton John) who arranges and conducts for Brian Wilson's live touring show and after a 45 minute phone conversation about what Mat wasn't keen on, on the album, he realised Paul totally understood where he was coming from.
After a few months wait for Paul to get back from touring they entered the studio with "Paul's players" and as soon as they hit record, Mat explains "I was getting chills up my neck, it was one of the happiest days of my life, and finally we had nailed it!"
Tracks such as 'Come Back; which Mat wrote in ten minutes on a $300 Daneelectro Singlecut guitar initially, came to life, with Paul's rich string arrangements and features guitarist and percussionist Ken Stringfellow (R.E.M.).
It still took a few months to get the recording process finished but finally after a torturous nineteen months they album was finally finished.
The result is an album filled with lavish arrangements and catchy melodies which take us on a nostalgic musical journey inspired by chic 70s soul, yet the band don't hesitate to add their own unique and elegant contemporary stamp to the record.
