Moving Ahead by Gerardo Frisina

 

“Moving Ahead” is the long-awaited new work by Gerardo Frisina, a double LP worth of new material that gathers together the various sounds that have characterized his entire production. The experience collected over this long period therefore strongly affects a multiform album whose stylistic components are easily identifable (Latin jazz, nu-jazz, Afro-Cuban, dub, electronic music) but that transcends any possible classifcation as a whole.
The musical evolution of “Moving Ahead” is centered on hypnotic and pushing rhythmic patterns, on which the various guest musicians express themselves with all their melodic and emotional intensity. In addition to the already known Gendrickson Mena (trumpet), Ernesto Lopez (drums and percussion), Alfonso Deidda (baritone sax, flute) and Fabrizio Bernasconi (piano, Fender Rhodes), a special mention must be credited to Haruna Kuyateh, a young Gambian whom Gerardo saw performing as a street artist by pure chance by walking around the town of Milan: thanks to his instrument, the kora, the album’s sound spectrum is enriched with new sensations in the songs “Naihi”, “Naihi’s Son” and “Kerewan”.
From the “Marombo” EP, which anticipated this release, “Moving Ahead” also delivers a new version of its title-track, with a slightly different rhythm and with the addition of the vibraphone. The CD version of this record also includes the second part of “Marombo” and the exclusive “Mwanga”, a bonus track not present in the 2LP edition.
In short, “Moving Ahead” is the mature continuation of a 20-year long solo career, started in the early 2000s with “Ad Lib”, that once again demonstrates how Gerardo’s creativity still manifests itself today at very high levels.

As anticipation builds around the release of their upcoming album "Bohemia After Dawn" dropping on July 17th, German latin / nu jazz outfit Bahama Soul Club gives another sneak peak into what to expect on the new full-length with "Mango EP", a 3-track teaser centered around track "Mango" featuring Cuban singer Arema Arega.

Sure it will soon be a classic in your library. Promise! We’ve sent some early demos to friends and supporters and wonderful feedback came in the shape of two brilliant remixes. Mighty „Club des Belugas“ (anybody knows these guys??) sent an irresistible Bossa Remix, and world famous project „TheEEs“ (Yes these, everybody knows those) just flew in with a sappy Reggae Roll. It is rumored that these guys now turned their back to badly cashed majordeals to sign for a Million dollar deal on Buyú-The track comes accompanied by a groovy video by André Neundorf that blends new film with archival footage taken from movie "Soy Cuba" by Mikhail Kalatozov. Also on the EP are remixes by Club Des Belugas who go in a bossanova direction and new project TheEEs who add caribbean reggae vibes.

As a child, the only idea was to be able to fly. At the same time, you take off
enthusiastically, ready to save the world. As an adult you need a lot more
equipment. With their new airy album "True Sky Heroes", the Wuppertal-
based NuJazz heroes from JOJO EFFECT may not save the world. But
keeping the joy of life alive is also a reasonable achievement.
Producer Jürgen Kausemann and his excellent acting artists invite you on a
sightseeing flight through space and time. The opener "Along came Fred"
already had a perfect start with gruff electric guitars and soul driven by a
powerful brass section.
Dennis Legree then interprets "No Joke" with the dynamics of a David
Bowie. The congenial Gardener of Delight & ZOUZOULECTRIC remix of
this piece also represents the pre-release of the album. The title song "True
Sky Heros" has the energy of a rousing gospel thanks to the California Soul
Diva Brenda Boykin. Jazz is the driving force in the stratosphere permeated
by sound tinkering, electro beats and remixes, through which JOJO
EFFECT glides.The British jazz crooner Iain Mackenzie celebrates the
finest Scat-inspired jazz vocals in the song "What is Right & What is
Wrong".
"True Sky Heroes" sets new rhythmic aspects in the remixes of the already
well-known songs "Too Hot for Tango" and "He Killed Capoty", which let
these titles shine in special timbres.
With the music of the incomparable Andrew Sisters and an electrical update
from Tchaikovsky's Sugar Fairy, the idea of time travel is also vigorously
served.
At the end of the album, the temporary instrumental song "Weekend Waltz"
softly initiates the landing and gently flatters the listener into the weekend.
Jürgen Kausemann and JOJO EFFECT present with their new album "True
Sky Heroes" nothing less than the music for the twenties of this millennium.

After ‘ages’ of silence around the German soul-jazz outfit founded by Oliver Belz they are back … laid back, uber-cool and more relaxed than ever. With a matured taste of finest Algarvian vinhos BSC are working on a new album in the tranquil and inspiring environment of their new Portuguese recording studio located in an idyllic Algarvian countryside setting between Lagos and Sagres.
One of the first tracks called "Never Roam No More" includes excerpts from a 1946 recorded version from Hooker’s "My First Wife Left Me", a deeply personal reflection on loosing his wife Maude Mathis. "We love it when he speaks directly to the ‘boys’, the ‘fellas’. It’s fucking hard for men to let down their guard and show vulnerability, but it’s ten times harder with the guys due to the unwritten codes of male bonding behavior in the early 50s." So give the guy credit for his honesty, a quality shared by all the truly great blues artists. No doubt a special combination of styles to bring a legend to life... call it resurrection shuffle.

A beautiful composition by Everett Robbins / Porter Grainger. Legend Bessie Smith recorded it in the 20s, Jimmy Witherspoon in the 40s, and Billie made her amazing version 1949...
Now, 70 years later, Billie's sound makes love with the contemporary Latin Nu-Jazz of the Bahama Soul Club.
